North Runcton

The school around 1914

This photo, printed as a postcard, was given to the school records by Maudie Mallows who dated it as approximately 1914. She identified the following members of her family: Ada (third from right, back row); Florrie (second from right, middle row); Edie (right hand standing child); Jack (second from right, sitting). The school master is John van Dyke. His memorial plaque in the church reads

"To the glory of God and in loving memory of John van Dyke, for 13 years Head Master of the school in this parish, who entered into rest 23rd January 1916 aged 62 years "Until the day breaks and the shadows flee away"".

He was the grandfather of John van Dyke, who had been headmaster for 15 years at the time of the school's closure in 1983.
